Water that has remained enclosed in sedimentary rock since deposition without taking part in the circulation of ground-water.

CONT

Fossil water or paleowater is groundwater that has remained in an aquifer for millennia. Water can rest underground in aquifers for thousands or even millions of years.

Eau présente dans un aquifère depuis une très longue durée (de l'ordre de plusieurs siècles au moins, plus généralement plusieurs millénaires ou dizaines de millénaires), entrée souvent sous des conditions climatiques et morphologiques différentes des conditions actuelles, hors du jeu du cycle de l'eau contemporain.

Agua infiltrada en un acuífero durante una antigua época geológica bajo condiciones climáticas y morfológicas diferentes de las actuales y almacenada desde entonces.

OBS

El agua fósil puede ser también congénita si quedó atrapada al momento de formarse la roca en una época geológica antigua. Sin embargo, el agua congénita no siempre es fósil ya que puede haberse producido en sedimentos recientes. El agua fósil y el agua congénita pueden calificarse asimismo de intersticiales si quedaron retenidas en los intersticios de una roca.
