Le parapente est constitué d'une aile elliptique à caissons en tissu souple, reliée par de nombreuses cordelettes (les suspentes) à un harnais dans lequel le pilote prend place en position assise. Pour contrôler la direction et la vitesse, il peut soit tirer sur les freins, qui changent la forme du bord de fuite de l'aile, soit se pencher de côté dans le harnais.
