The energy at the Earth's surface comes from the Sun, the contribution of the geosphere being negligible. Solar radiation spans the spectrum from ultraviolet through visible to infrared. About one-third of this radiant energy is reflected back into space or scattered by clouds and particulate matter in suspension in the atmosphere.
