Le parti architectural d'un édifice désigne à la fois son caractère visible prédominant et son aspect général, lié à la disposition des pleins et des vides de sa façade, à sa modénature et à ses proportions d'ensemble.

Il n'y a pas de parti architectural sans terrain ni programme. Aucun projet ne s'impose tant que l'étude du parti n'a pas été traitée congrûment. Le développement méthodique de la conception d'un édifice exige qu'entre les études préliminaires et l'avant-projet, une étape importante, sanctionnée par une décision, soit entièrement consacrée au parti. [...] Retenir un parti architectural c'est choisir parmi les solutions proposées celle qui répond le mieux aux exigences formulées, exigences parfois opposées entre lesquelles le maître d'ouvrage doit arbitrer en fonction du caractère obligatoire ou facultatif qu'il leur accorde.
