Durant une éclipse, comme la luminosité ambiante diminue, le réflexe de ne pas fixer le Soleil est amoindri. Le côté spectaculaire du phénomène attire aussi l'attention, et donc le regard. Néanmoins, toute partie du Soleil non dissimulée par la Lune est dangereuse pour la rétine. Pour cette raison, il existe un danger accru d'abîmer nos yeux durant la phase partielle d'une éclipse.
