The term "participatory Web" refers to the explosive use of the World Wide Web as an open forum where users quickly and easily make personal contributions through weblogs, wikis, annotated bookmark lists, multimedia repositories, podcasts, and tagging and commenting on any or all of the above. For these users, the emphasis in web browsing has largely shifted from consuming to producing information and from individualized experience to community.

participatory Web: The Translation Bureau recommends in its revised 2013 Linguistic Recommendation that "Web" be capitalized when it is used as a noun meaning the "World Wide Web."

Les blogs, les wikis, les réseaux sociaux constituant les nouvelles communautés du Web 2.0, la capacité à commenter, à créer des liens, à s'intégrer dans des réseaux virtuels, à modifier le contenu rédigé par d'autres, à publier ses propres articles dans des journaux citoyens, à voter en ligne, sont en train de complètement faire évoluer le mode de relation entre les individus, où tout un chacun est à la fois acteur, auteur et lecteur, et ce mode de relation est bien plus que collaboratif, il est participatif. Nous sommes donc en train de participer tous ensemble, grâce à Internet, à la création d'un flux continu de contenu, qui se structure progressivement au fur et à mesure des besoins des uns et des autres, et nous permet d'entrer dans une nouvelle dimension, celle du Web participatif.
