Formes mathématiques qui ne sont ni des lignes ni des surfaces, qui sont intermédiaires entre surfaces et volumes.

OBS

Nom donné au tournant du siècle, par les mathématiciens Weierstrass (1815-1897), Cantor (1845-1918) et Peano (1858-1932) à des courbe très complexes qui remplissaient l'espace ou qui n'avaient pas de tangente, issues de fonctions à comportement imprévisible qu'ils avaient conçues sans se les représenter graphiquement (à l'exception des plus simples). Ils les croyaient sans contrepartie dans la nature. La géométrie fractale en a fait un objet privilégié d'étude.
