La cause essentielle de limitation de la capacité du tunnel sous la Manche est l'espacement minimum en temps séparant deux trains. Cet espacement minimum détermine le nombre maximum de trains pouvant transiter par heure dans le tunnel. Des études effectuées sur l'échauffement du tunnel consécutif au passage des trains montrent qu'en l'absence d'un système de réfrigération, il n'est pas exclu qu'il soit nécessaire de limiter le nombre de trains en dessous de la capacité limite découlant du critère d'espacement minimum, ceci afin de limiter l'élévation de température.
