En Angleterre, la «nobility» se composait des pairs et, à partir de 1613, des baronnets. Les «lords», ou «peers», étaient définis institutionnellement du fait qu'ils siégeaient dans la première des deux chambres du Parlement. Depuis Édouard III la Chambre Haute (Chambre des lords depuis Henri VIII) était composée des hauts dignitaires ecclésiastiques et des barons. Ceux-ci étaient les lords temporels, les pairs du royaume, et formaient le «peerage».
