A gem variety of albite with blue or bluish-white luster characterized by sharp internal reflections of blue, green, and yellow; an inhomogeneous, unmixed sodic plagioclase with a composition ranging between An2 (albite) and An24 (calcic oligoclase). It resembles moonstone, and is falsely called "moonstone" by jewelers.

Seule la série haute des plagioclases forme une solution solide continue. Dans la série basse il y a une lacune de miscibilité entre l'albite et un oligoclase d'environ An.25 (...) Dans cette intervalle on a un mélange de plusieurs phases nommé "péristérite". L'association est généralement tellement fine qu'elle n'est pas discernable au microscope optique, mais seulement au diffractomètre.
