Since the creation of the Permanent Joint Board of Defence (PJBD) in 1940, [Canada and the United States] have closely interacted on matters of national and international security. Bilateral defence institutions such as the PJBD and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) were created to ensure continental defense with a focus on interoperability, joint threat assessment, bilateral consultations and training exercises.

[The PJBD] is composed of military and diplomatic representatives from both nations. Its meetings have served as a window on Canada-U.S. defence relations for more than five decades.
