Enzyme oxydante pouvant décomposer l'eau oxygénée (peroxyde d'hydrogène, d'où son nom) avec production d'oxygène actif, c'est-à-dire capable d'oxyder énergiquement les corps voisins. Elle est très proche de la catalase, composée du même groupement prosthétique (hème) mais différente par la structure de sa partie protéinique (apo-enzyme).
