La chrominance traduit les couleurs en ajoutant un code à chaque point du signal de luminance. La luminance détermine les différentes intensités de gris en les traduisant en signaux électriques d'intensités différentes. Une couleur sera donc codée comme ceci : intensité lumineuse (luminance) + mélange des couleurs fondamentales (chrominance). Comme il faut 8 bits pour coder chaque degré de luminance, et qu'il y a trois couleurs fondamentales, on comprend que seules les images «24 bits» (8 bits de luminance 3 couleurs) soient capables de restituer le spectre visible dans toute sa richesse, c'est-à-dire en qualité photographique : c'est le «photoréalisme».
