Les matériaux piézoélectriques sont des cristaux naturels ou synthétiques, minéraux ou organiques, ne possédant pas de centre de symétrie. L'effet d'une compression ou d'un cisaillement est de dissocier les centres de gravité des charges positives et des charges négatives. Il apparaît ainsi des dipôles élémentaires dans la masse et, par influence, des charges de signes opposés sur les surfaces en regard. On distingue deux groupes de matériaux : les matériaux naturellement piézoélectriques (quartz, tourmaline) et les matériaux dits ferroélectriques, présentant des propriétés piézoélectriques après polarisation (tantalate de lithium, nitrate de lithium, berlinite sous forme de matériaux monocristallins, et céramiques ou polymères polaires sous forme de microcristaux orientés). 2, record 1, French, - mat%C3%A9riau%20pi%C3%A9zo%C3%A9lectrique
