The "World Women's Curling Championship" (singular because only one women's team is crowned champion) is named after the sponsor of the event (if there is one). The World Women's Curling Championship began in 1979 as the "Royal Bank of Scotland World Curling Championships," a name kept until 1981. The event was then successively named the "World Curling Championships" in 1982, the "Pioneer Life World Curling Championships" in 1983, again the "World Curling Championships" in 1984, the "H&M World Curling Championships" in 1985, back to "World Curling Championships" from 1986 to 1990, the "Canada Safeway World Curling Championships" in 1991 and 1992, again the "World Curling Championships" in 1993 and 1994, and the "Ford World Curling Championships" since 1995. 1, record 1, English, - World%20Women%27s%20Curling%20Championships
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 OBS
The expression "World Curling Championship" is singular when only one champion is crowned. But when the first "World Women's Curling Championship" was held in 1979, the plural form "World Curling Championships" was used because the event was already crowning the winner in the men's, senior men's, women's and senior women's categories; this generic designation was and will be used every time no official sponsor gives its name to the event. Nevertheless, "World Women's Curling Championship" is still appropriate to distinguish the women's event inside the "World Curling Championships.". 1, record 1, English, - World%20Women%27s%20Curling%20Championships
