La construction de ces canalisations [oléoducs ou gazoducs] pose des problèmes difficiles. Les méthodes actuelles utilisent la technique dite de pose à l'avancement. La canalisation est construite par éléments de tube de 12 mètres qui sont soudés bout à bout, à bord de la barge de pose. La partie de la canalisation qui est en cours de pose décrit une courbe située entre le fond marin et la barge de pose. Après chaque soudure, la barge de pose avance de la largeur d'un tube et le profil de la partie suspendue se déplace parallèlement à lui-même. Afin d'assurer la stabilité du profil, la barge de pose exerce une tension sur la canalisation.
