Plains bison once numbered in the millions. By 1880, only a few hundred plains bison were left. The return of the plains bison to the Beaver Hills area (Elk Island) began in 1907 when more than 400 arrived in the national park enroute to Buffalo National Park in Wainwright, Alberta. Largely because of the work at Elk Island National Park, the plains bison is no longer considered an endangered species. More than 100,000 plains bison are now found across North America. Canada's largest public herd of plains bison roam freely in Elk Island.
