Plant biomass (phytomass) can be divided into two major ecologically significant categories: plant tissue with cytoplasm inside (food for herbivores animals, primary consumers) and plant tissue without cytoplasm inside i.e., empty cell walls (food for detritivore animals and decomposer bacteria and fungi).
