Il a succédé au Mérychippus et vivait il y a environ quinze millions d'années, c'est le prédécesseur immédiat de l'Equus caballus. Il mesurait aux environs de 1,20 mètres. Il n'avait en pratique qu'un seul doigt, les autres étant passé à l'état rudimentaire.
