Jadis, le sillon laissé par un araire était appelé raie, car la terre était rejetée des deux côtés à la fois. Aujourd'hui, le sillon désigne plutôt l'ensemble de la zone modifiée par le passage du corps d'une charrue, et la raie seulement la tranchée ouverte dans le sol derrière le corps de la charrue.
