Most vertebrates replace their teeth continuously, generation following generation, for as long as they live. Such animals are said to be polyphyodont (= many + to grow + tooth).

En général, les dents des Vertébrés ont une existence assez courte et sont remplacées de façon continue et pratiquement illimitée. La plupart des non mammaliens sont dans ce cas et [chacun] est dit polyphyodonte: les Sélaciens ont une centaine de dentitions successives, les Crocodiles une vingtaine. Les dents des Amphibiens sont remplacées à peu près tous les 6 mois.
