Utilisé sur des machines-outils pour repérer la position d'un outil mobile sur un axe en cours d'usinage, il repose sur l'effet Wiedemann direct, du nom du scientifique qui découvrit en 1862 qu'un fil aimanté longitudinalement et parcouru par un courant électrique subit une torsion.
