Chief Trader: Hudson's Bay Company officer responsible for the actual fur bactering. Chief traders were generally promoted to their position after having honed their skills as a clerk in the service of the Company for at least 15-20 years.

OBS

According to Terry Smythe, Historical Research Division, Parks Canada, "chief trader" is a term used by the Hudson's Bay Company to refer to a rank of company officer. After 1821, fur traders in charge of the posts were given shares and made officers. In order of rank the officers were known as "chief factors", "chief traders" and "post masters".
