CONT

In the early years of the twentieth century many ... ceramic manufacturers ... adopted the technique of high-temperature firing and set up small design studios specifically for the use of artist-potters. Pottery designers thus benefited from having factory facilities and technical expertise close at hand, while in exchange the manufacturer gained an on-the-spot source of original design ideas.
