Si le coeur d'un puissant réacteur nucléaire n'est pas suffisamment refroidi, pour quelque raison que ce soit, il se mettra spontanément à fondre lorsqu'il aura atteint les 2 700 °C (ou 5 000 °F). Lorsque cela se produit, des centaines de poisons radioactifs -- produits par la réaction de fission -- s'échappent dans le bâtiment du réacteur, et une partie de ceux-ci dans l'environnement entourant la centrale.
