In the Ahnet Basin of southern Algeria, carbonate mud buildups were established in a deeper subtidal environment during Givetian times. The primary cavity system (irregular cavities, stromatactis) of these buildups exhibits a calcite cement succession precipitated in marine-phreatic to deep-burial environments.

Les cavités primaires sont des défauts dans l'architecture du cristal, des lacunes dans l'ordonnancement du réseau cristallin. Elles se forment lors d'un blocage momentané et local de la croissance d'une face. Des solides déposés sur une face cristalline en développement, ou des variations dans l'équilibre de la solution mère peuvent provoquer de tels arrêts de croissance. Très généralement, la croissance cristalline se poursuivant obture la cavité primaire.
