Cosmic rays: Highly energetic extraterrestrial ionizing radiation. The primary cosmic rays, i.e. the cosmic rays incident on the top of the Earth's atmosphere, are predominantly composed of fully ionized (i.e. positively charged atomic nuclei, having energies ranging from a few times 106 eV to 1018 or 1019 eV. The secondary cosmic rays, i.e. those produced in the Earth's atmosphere by the primary cosmic rays and other secondary cosmic rays, are complex in character and include nucleons, mesons, electrons, neutrinos, X-rays, y[gamma]-rays, etc. 3, record 1, English, - primary%20cosmic%20rays

Rayonnement cosmique : Ensemble de particules (électrons, hypérons, mésons, neutrons, nucléons, photons y[gamma] parvenant, à travers l'atmosphère, à la surface de la Terre, animées de grandes vitesses. On distingue une composante molle arrêtée par quelques centimètres de plomb et une composante dure beaucoup plus pénétrante. Le rayonnement primaire (à son entrée dans l'atmosphère) est constitué par des particules de très haute énergie (jusque 1020eV), provenant en partie du Soleil en partie des espaces interstellaires ou intergalactiques. [...] On trouve parmi les particules primaires essentiellement des protons, puis des hélions et d'autres noyaux atomiques d'autant plus rares qu'ils sont lourds.
