À l'issue du traitement d'épuration de l'eau, les radionucléides se retrouvent, concentrés, dans des résidus, boues, résines ou filtres. Ces résidus constituent les déchets tertiaires de l'opération initiale. Ils subiront, eux aussi, des traitements, de conditionnement cette fois, et le déchet final sera très différent du déchet primaire. Il sera toujours caractérisé par le fait qu'il contient des radionucléides mais le support matériel, le vecteur, de ces radionucléides aura changé.
