Idiotypes are usually specific for the individual antibody clone (private idiotype), but are sometimes shared between different antibody clones (public, cross-reacting or recurrent idiotypes).

Idiotypes privés et idiotypes récurrents. En règle générale, il existe peu de réactions croisées entre un sérum anti-idiotypique préparé contre les anticorps spécifiques d'un antigène donné produits par un individu et les anticorps spécifiques du même antigène produits par des individus différents de la même espèce. Les idiotypes sont dits privés.
