A public official appointed or elected to represent the state in criminal cases in a particular judicial district.

CONT

The prosecuting officer of the United States government in each of the federal judicial districts. Under the state governments, the prosecuting officer who represents the state in each of its judicial districts. In some states, where the territory is divided, for judicial purposes, into sections called by some other name than "districts," the same officer is denominated "prosecuting attorney," "county attorney" or "state's attorney."

In the United States, the State's Attorney (or State Attorney) is, most commonly, an elected official who represents the State (prosecution) in criminal prosecutions and is often the chief law enforcement officer of their respective county, circuit, or district.

OBS

The position of State's Attorney is analogous to that of the District Attorney, Commonwealth's Attorney, County Prosecutor, Prosecuting Attorney (Prosecutor), or Solicitor (South Carolina).

OBS

Il est bon de noter que l'expression «procureur de l'État» est utilisée comme équivalent de «State's attorney» aux États-Unis d'Amérique. En France, on utilise les expressions «ministère public» et le «procureur de la République» représentant les intérêts de l'État. Ils jouent le même rôle en matière civile, criminelle et pénale. Cependant, c'est le terme «procureur de la Couronne» qui peut être considérée au Canada comme équivalent de «State's attorney», «prosecuting attorney» et «public prosecutor».
