On December 12, 2003, the Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness was transferred from the Department of National Defence to the Department of the Solicitor General and the National Crime Prevention Centre was transferred from the Department of Justice to the Department of the Solicitor General, from which the new portfolio of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness was being created. Subsequenly, the Department of the Solicitor General was abolished and the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness was established on April 4, 2005.

Par la suite, le ministère du Solliciteur général fut aboli et le ministère de la Sécurité publique et de la Protection civile fut constitué le 4 avril 2005.
