A pulse-echo ultrasound system is being developed to detect the position of plaque within coronary and other arteries. Designed to be used in coronary angioplasty the sensor fits into a catheter with the laser light guide.

L'échocardiographie utilise les ultra-sons avec une sonde émettrice soit unique, soit multiple mais qui est à la fois émettrice et réceptrice. L'émission est de très courte durée et ensuite la sonde écoute les échos réfléchis. La durée de l'émission est généralement le millième de la durée du temps de réception. La durée donc d'une émission est le plus souvent d'une microseconde et il y a donc une émission chaque milliseconde. Cette technique est dite des ultra-sons pulsés et ce sont ceux qui sont utilisés uniquement en imagerie.
