Record 1 1993-10-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • String Instruments
DEF

Narrow inlay usually formed of 3 strips of wood, glued into a groove that follows the outline of violins, the purpose of which is to prevent chipping of the edges.

CONT

The purfling also serves an acoustical function. The strips glued into the groove interrupt the wood of the belly so that the continuity of the material is broken and the active part of the belly is contained within a well defined limit. The purfling prevents serious damage in the event of the belly receiving a knock in the direction of the grain.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments de musique à cordes
DEF

Dans les instruments à cordes, étroites bandes incrustées sur les bords de la table et du fond pour les renforcer et éviter les fissures.
