Les carottiers manuels sont utilisés pour collecter un échantillon vertical dans les sédiments des étangs, lacs, marais, ports, etc. L'utilisation est très simple : les deux poignées permettent de pousser et d'enfoncer le carottier dans les sédiments. Si la profondeur d'eau ne permet pas d'opérer avec des cuissardes, une canne d'extension se fixe sur la tête, sa longueur jusqu'à 4,5 mètres permet de travailler depuis un quai, un ponton ou une embarcation. Au delà, une ligne se fixe sur l'oeil entre les poignées, le carottier descend alors dans l'eau sous son propre poids.
