Fissure congénitale de la colonne vertébrale. Le vrai rachischisis est le rachischisis antérieur, conséquence d'une notochordodysraphie, il intéresse les corps vertébraux qui sont soit fissurés (vertèbres en papillon), soit partiellement agénésiques (hémivertèbres). Il s'accompagne parfois d'une hernie méningée (méningocèle antérieure). On donne parfois à tort au spina bifida le nom de rachischisis postérieur.
