In the extreme north, a series of intense rainfall episodes and tropical storms during December 1997-January 1998 contributed to record October-April rainfall totals at Darwin (2499 mm). At Katherine, located southeast of Darwin, a series of major rainfall episodes during late December was followed by an additional 914 mm of rain in January.

Par exemple, au passage d'une perturbation de front polaire, la pluie continue liée au front chaud, les brumes du secteur chaud et les averses intermittentes de la traîne constituent un même épisode pluvieux qui peut durer 24 à 48 heures. Autre exemple, le passage d'un cyclone tropical est accompagné d'un épisode pluvieux particulièrement intense et qui se poursuit plusieurs jours.
