Il a été récemment montré que les sérums de malades atteints de polyarthrite rhumatoïde contenaient avec une très grande fréquence des anticorps antinucléaires d'une spécificité particulière, rarement rencontrés en dehors de la polyarthrite rhumatoïde. L'antigène reconnu (appelé RANA pour Rheumatoid Arthritis Nuclear Antigen) est détecté par précipitation (d'où le terme initial RAP pour Rheumatoid Arthritis Precipitin) ou en immunofluorescence indirecte sur des lignées continues lymphocytaires infectées par le virus d'Epstein-Barr (EBV).
