[...] l'Institut national d'optique, grâce à sa capacité de fabriquer des fibres optiques spéciales, s'est lancé dans la fabrication de fibres dopées aux terres rares. Aujourd'hui, ces fibres sont utilisées, entre autres, dans les domaines de recherche en télécommunication, instrumentation et capteurs. L'INO a effectué des recherches sur plusieurs terres rares dont le néodyme, le praséodyme, l'holmium, le thulium, l'ytterbium et l'erbium. Les propriétés amplificatrices de ce dernier ont été particulièrement étudiées. En effet, lorsque pompé dans une de ses bandes d'absorption, l'erbium devient un milieu de gain pour les longueurs d'onde autour de 1.5 um, longueurs d'onde privilégiées pour les communications par fibres optiques.
