English

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematical Geography
  • Remote Sensing
  • Cartography
DEF

... a pattern of horizontal scan lines, as traced by an electron beam on a computer screen.

OBS

It is commonly used as a term to describe a system of representing images, where the image is composed of small, internally uniform cells arranged in a grid. The order of image storage is typically by scanlines, progressing from left to right along scanlines, and then from top to bottom from one scan to the next. Some GIS systems use raster image structure.

OBS

rater: term and definition provided by the Canadian Hydrographic Service.

Domaine(s)
  • Géographie mathématique
  • Télédétection
  • Cartographie
DEF

DEF

[A] rectangular or square array formed by a number of horizontal scan lines comprising a number of picture elements.

OBS

The number of scan lines establishes the vertical dimension of the array and the number of picture elements forms vertical rows which establish the horizontal dimension of the array.

OBS

raster: term standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC); term officially approved by the Government EDP Standards Committee (GESC).
