Chaque éolienne a une «cote», souvent appelée la «capacité nominale», qui décrit la quantité de puissance maximale que peut produire une éolienne à tout moment donné dans des conditions de vents forts et réguliers. Par exemple, à une vitesse de vent de 10 mètres par seconde (50 km/h), une éolienne de 1 000 kW (ou de 1 mégawatt) produira 1 000 kilowatts (ou 1 MW) d'électricité.
