Rayleigh scattering of sunlight from particles in the atmosphere is the reason why the light from the sky is blue. The amount of Rayleigh scattering that occurs to a beam of light is dependent upon the size of the particles and the wavelength of the light; in particular, the scattering coefficient, and hence the intensity of the scattered light, varies inversely with the fourth power of the wavelength, a relation known as the Rayleigh law. 3, record 1, English, - Rayleigh%20scattering

La diffusion de Rayleigh concerne les molécules dont la taille est très inférieure à celle de la longueur d'onde (donc petites molécules et grande longueur d'onde). Rayleigh a montré en 1899 que son intensité décroît selon la puissance quatre de la longueur d'onde. Sa direction est préférentiellement orientée en avant et en arrière par rapport au sens de propagation du rayonnement incident. Ainsi, les rayonnements de courte longueur d'onde, comme le bleu, sont plus diffusés que les rayonnements de grande longueur d'onde, comme le rouge.
