RIA (Reactivity Insertion Accident). Un RIA correspond à un transitoire de puissance de grande amplitude mais de très courte durée (quelques dizaines de millisecondes) susceptible de se produire en particulier pendant un arrêt du réacteur. Il ensuit un chauffage quasiadiabatique du combustible et une élévation très rapide de température qui dans un premier temps concerne surtout la périphérie de la pastille combustible. Cette zone qui était la plus froide (400 à 500 °C en conditions nominales) peut alors atteindre, en quelques millisecondes, une température de l'ordre de 1 400 °C.
