No work is allowed at the faces (flat ends) of a running reactor. An end shield provides shutdown shielding only. Thickness of shielding at the reactor face is about one meter. Space is limited by the need to fuel the reactor.

Le remplacement du combustible épuisé se fait pendant que le réacteur fonctionne. En effet, les grappes de combustible neuves sont poussées dans les tubes de force par la machine télécommandée qui dessert alors une des deux faces du réacteur. Simultanément, les grappes épuisées sont recueillies par la machine desservant l’autre face du réacteur et dirigées vers la piscine de stockage, adjacente au bâtiment du réacteur.
