En présence d'absorption, le spectre réel des neutrons est plus «dur» que le spectre de Maxwell : - à haute énergie, on y trouve les neutrons terminant leur ralentissement alors que pour un spectre de Maxwell il n'y a pratiquement plus de neutrons au-delà de trois ou quatre fois la vitesse moyenne; - à basse énergie où l'absorption est plus intense, puisque les sections efficaces sont à peu près en 1/v, le nombre de neutrons est plus faible dans le spectre réel que dans le spectre de Maxwell.
