(Italian). Literally, antique red. The name given by Josiah Wedgwood to his unglazed red pottery which was an improvement on ware of this kind introduced at the end of the 17th century by the Elers brothers. Decorative ware based on Greek and Roman pottery (then called antique) formed part of Wedgwood's production, hence the name.
