Hydrocarbons: Generic name for organic compounds composed only of carbon and hydrogen. Gasoline and other petroleum products are largely composed of hydrocarbons. In sediment, hydrocarbons of petrochemical origin generally come from petrochemical industry waste, rehandling losses, spills or discharges from ships and so forth.
