A reactor of any power level used primarily as a research tool for basic or applied research.

Research reactor ... may also be used for training, materials testing, and production of radioisotopes. In Atomic Energy Commission usage, the term is limited to reactors having a thermal power level of 10 megawatts or less.

Reactors in this class include: (a) low-flux research reactor; (b) high-flux research reactor; (c) pulsed reactor; (d) materials testing reactor; (e) zero-power reactor (may also be an experimental reactor).
