U.S. independent living centers helping individuals with severe disabilities lead independent lives. Works to: identify attributes of successful selfhelp support groups; develop and test instruments to assess social support levels within selfhelp support groups; implement and evaluate intervention strategies for accurate and positive portrayals of people with disabilities by the media; deter unlawful parking in handicapped-designated parking spaces and enhance public awareness of issues related to disability and independent living; establish accreditation standards to evaluate ILC programs, services, and management.
