Le Réseau de surveillance du phytoplancton et des phycotoxines (REPHY) a été créé par l'Ifremer en 1984, suite à l'observation de nombreuses intoxications de type diarrhéique chez les consommateurs de coquillages en 1983 et 1984, sur les côtes bretonnes. Ces intoxications avaient pour origine le développement dans le milieu littoral de Dinophysis, phytoplancton ayant la propriété de produire des toxines diarrhéiques. Le REPHY est un réseau national dont la couverture est assurée par douze laboratoires côtiers qui se partagent le littoral français.
