The resource curse is a paradox faced by resource-rich countries ... where the natural resource wealth that should propel development actually results in slower economic growth, increased poverty, higher levels of corruption, worse governance, and greater potential for violent conflict.

Beaucoup de pays en voie de développement riches en ressources naturelles sont encore plus pauvres que d'autres pays moins bien pourvus. Ceci s'explique par le fait que les ressources naturelles constituent un enjeu de taille qui attire bien des convoitises. De nombreux pays possédant d'importants gisements de minéraux ou des cultures marchandes de valeur tombent aux mains de régimes répressifs ou corrompus ou sont déchirés par des guerres intestines. Ce problème est connu sous le nom de «malédiction des ressources».
